Yesterday was the Children's Day celebration at Kids Cove and they had a sportsfest to commemorate the event. It was held at Toa Payoh Town Park and we were there bright and early -- but we were too early, that we had to wait for around 50 minutes and wait for the rest to arrive. That's Filipino time for you.

The event started with a prayer. My son read the prayer from a "cue card" held by his teacher Gigi. He stumbled over long words like "showcasing," "gathering" and "wonderful." But he finished reading aloud the whole thing and for that, I am proud.

It was great to see the kids having fun in spite of the heat. They were divided into 2 teams -- orange and white. There were four games wherein the teams had to compete in: running, going to market, hurdles and sack race. My son was in the white team and guess which team won? :)
But regardless of who won, it was great to see what the kids are capable of. To us, they were just games meant for kids, but to these kids, this was a proof they they had a concept of speed, balance and strength. Since all the games were done by the kids without any assistance from their parents, it was also a picture of their growing sense of independence.
There is a future for these kids. I am sure of it.
